Moving house, no available appointment for weeks, zero chemistry with your driving instructor – there are many good reasons to consider changing driving schools. And one bad reason not to do it: the fear of „losing everything“ or getting into trouble. Here is the sober truth about your rights, the actual costs and the procedure – written fairly, because it applies to switching to any driving school just as much as away from one.

First things first: you are free to switch at any time

Changing driving schools is possible at any time – without giving reasons, without the consent of the old driving school. You are a customer, not property. And the law explicitly backs you up on this: the previous driving school must confirm to you the completed parts of training with the training record (§ 6 para. 2 of the Driving Student Training Regulations). She must not refuse this confirmation, delay it, or make it dependent on a „release fee“ – you must naturally settle any outstanding invoices, but there is no statutory „transfer fee“.

What you take with you – and what you don't

• Items to be taken: all completed Theory lessons, all Special services (both documented in the training record) and your passed theory test – it remains valid for 12 months, independently of the driving school. Your driving licence application also remains active; if you switch to a driving school in a different testing district, the test authorisation is transferred (small fee, in the region of 20 to 25 euros).
• Not directly translatable: your usual ones Practice sessions as „credit“ – of course you take your skills with you, but the new driving instructor will form their own opinion of your standard (an assessment lesson is usual). Depending on your level of training, they will then calibrate how many lessons are missing until you are ready for the test.
• Lost is: the already paid Base fee of the old driving school – the new one may demand her own. That is the actual „price“ of the change.

What the switch really costs

The honest bill: new basic amount (the largest item – some driving schools reduce it for transfer students, it costs nothing to ask), where applicable the Transfer of the inspection order, a Assessment lesson at the new driving instructor's – and on the other hand, the final bill from the old driving school based on their posted price list. Against that, you should offset the cost of not changing: anyone who, out of frustration, only has a lesson every three weeks often burns through more money on refresher lessons than the change would ever cost – not to mention the ticking 12-month limit for the theory test.

How the switch works – in 5 steps

• 1. Choose a new driving school and have an honest initial consultation: outline your current level of training, get a price list, and ask about credit for prior learning.
• Cancel membership at the old driving school – informal, friendly, without pressure to justify. One sentence is enough: „I am finishing my training with you and kindly ask for confirmation of my training components.“
• 3. Bring your training record book with you (your legally guaranteed confirmation) and resolve outstanding items.
• Register at the new driving school – she will take care of the paperwork with you, including the examination request.
• 5. Drive assessment lesson and plan the path to the test together. Rule of thumb: after two or three hours with the new driving instructor, the switch is forgotten – and often just the fresh perspective solves the problem that had previously stagnated for months.

The 5 most common reasons for switching – honestly assessed

• 1. No appointments: Weeks of waiting for driving lessons are the most objective reason to switch – learning progress thrives on frequency, and the ticking 12-month theory test deadline won't wait. First, ask openly (sometimes it's a temporary bottleneck), then make a firm decision.
• 2. The chemistry isn't right: The most common reason – and the one where changing the internal driving instructor should be tried first. Only when that doesn't help is the driving school itself the right place for action.
• 3. Removal: most straightforward case, see below – nobody is hesitating here, and quite rightly so.
• 4. Opaque costs: If bills don't match the displayed prices or items are constantly being added, mistrust is justified. Please ask for a written breakdown first – if this is not properly cleared up, changing provider is also a signal.
• 5. A feeling of stagnation: the trickiest reason. Stagnation can be due to the driving school – or it can be a normal learning plateau. The litmus test: have it explained to you in concrete terms what you are lacking to be test-ready and what that is based on. A precise answer speaks for staying, evasive stalling for leaving. Check beforehand: Does it really have to be a replacement?

If your problem is not the driving school, but the chemistry with a single driving instructor, there is a simpler solution: the Changing driving instructors within the driving school. That is a completely normal request for which you don't owe an explanation – a single sentence in the office is enough („I'd like to drive with someone else for a change“). Good driving schools will react professionally to this, as they know: learning only works with trust. Special case: moving house

When moving to another town, the transfer process is standard procedure and completely straightforward: take your training certificate with you, register at your new address, and have your test booking transferred. However, your driving licence application must be submitted to the relevant authority in your residence – so after moving house and registering your new address, the application goes through the new driving licence office. Allow some bureaucratic time for this and clarify the procedure early on with the new driving school – they know the drill.

Frequently asked questions about changing driving schools

Can the old driving school block the transfer?

No. She has to countersign your training modules – that is a legal requirement, not a favour. With outstanding invoices, she may insist on payment, but she cannot prevent the transfer itself.

Will my passed theory test become invalid if I switch?

No – it is valid for 12 months from passing, independently of the driving school. Changing does not alter this deadline in any way.

Do I have to repeat my theory lessons or special drive lessons?

No – everything confirmed in the training record remains valid at the new driving school. Only in the case of very long breaks does the rule apply that the theory test must not lie more than two years in the past.

How do I tell my previous driving instructor?

Short, friendly, without blame – „It doesn't work for me anymore, I'm changing“ is completely sufficient. Driving instructors experience changes regularly in both directions; the idea of a major conflict usually only exists in one's own head.
