Which driving licence is right for me?

No. Legally, it remains a Category B driving licence – the code 197 is also entered on the licence. This code records that the holder has passed the automatic transmission test and completed manual transmission training, but does not restrict Category B to automatic vehicles. No. B78 is Class B with code 78 – a restriction to vehicles without a clutch pedal (automatic). This restriction can be lifted at a later date by completing additional manual gearbox training, including a test drive. Details: B78.

Yes. BF17 (supervised driving from the age of 17) is a variant within Category B – you can choose your training route (traditional manual gearbox training, B197 or B78) separately and freely. Details: BF17.

Yes. The code number 197 does not restrict your category B licence to automatic vehicles – you are therefore generally permitted to drive manual vehicles abroad as well. Outside the EU or the EEA, an international driving permit may also be required depending on the country you are visiting.

The B196 licence may be suitable if you are at least 25 years old, have held a Class B licence for at least five years, intend to ride a 125cc motorcycle mainly in Germany, and do not plan to progress to more powerful motorcycles. You’ll need to complete the compulsory rider training and have the code 196 entered on your licence – but you won’t need to take a driving test.

B196 is a national extension of Category B and requires the holder to meet certain age and previous ownership criteria, as well as to have completed a prescribed driver training course. A1 is a standard motorbike licence category – and is usually the more suitable option, particularly for use abroad or if you plan to progress to a higher category. Depending on your age and plans, an A2 or A licence may also be a more sensible option.

No. The licence endorsement with the code 196 is only valid in Germany. For driving abroad, you need an appropriate standard motorcycle licence – depending on your age, previously held licences and plans, A1, A2 or A.

Under driving licence law, with a category B licence you are allowed to tow a trailer with a maximum authorised mass of up to 750 kg. For heavier trailers, the sum of the maximum authorised masses of the car and trailer must not exceed 3,500 kg. For this, the figures in section F.2 are particularly decisive. In addition, the towing vehicle's technically permissible trailer loads, particularly the details in O.1 and O.2, as well as other vehicle limits, must be complied with.

B96 is an extension of Category B for vehicle combinations weighing between 3,500 and 4,250 kg – this requires driver training of at least 7 hours; there is no test; B96 is valid throughout the EU. Be is a separate licence category for trailers up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass – with a practical test, but without a theory test.
