You have a maximum of 45 minutes for the 30 questions from the official question bank – though those who are well prepared will finish in just 10 to 15 minutes. Many of these are so-called number questions, for which you need to know specific values. Every wrong answer gives you penalty points. From 11 penalty points onwards, you fail the test. But don't worry: with a good study plan and regular practice, this won't be a problem. This is how the theory test works – from registration to passing

From registration to passing the test, you always go through the same steps. If you know beforehand what is coming your way, you take a lot of the pressure off yourself:

  1. Registration at the driving school. This is where it all begins – you sign up for your driving licence category.
  2. Submit the application to the authority early. Submit your driving licence application to the driving licence authority as early as possible – in many places this can also be done easily online. This is important because you are only allowed to take the theory test once your processed paperwork has been returned from the authority to the driving school. Since processing can take several weeks, the rule of thumb is: the earlier the application is submitted, the less you will have to wait in the end.
  3. Attend theory lessons. For category B, there are 14 mandatory topics (basic and additional material). All of them must be attended before you are allowed to take the test.
  4. Learn alongside the app. Don't wait until the lesson is over – it's best to start practising in short daily sessions while it's still going on.
  5. Wait for the paperwork. Your application documents must first be processed by the authorities and sent back to the driving school. The driving school will let you know as soon as they are there.
  6. Free pre-test. Many driving schools conduct a mock test before registering you for the practical test. This is legally required: the driving school must ensure that you are sufficiently prepared – for you, this is a good way to assess where you stand.
  7. Test on the TÜV. You’ll sit the actual exam on a computer at the exam centre (TÜV) – 30 questions, with a maximum of 45 minutes allowed.
  8. Results in a few minutes. You will find out whether you have passed while you are still there.
  9. After passing. Passing your theory test extends the validity of your paperwork by one year from the date of the exam. During this year, you can take your time completing your practical training and taking the practical test.

Two facts that many people don’t know: Firstly, you can sit the official theory test at the TÜV in 12 languages take – in addition to German, among others in English, French, Turkish, Romanian, Russian, Spanish and Modern Standard Arabic. Frequently asked questions about the theory test

How many questions are there in the Class B theory test – and how many mistakes are allowed?
30 questions, a maximum of 10 penalty points. But: two incorrectly answered 5-point questions automatically mean „fail“.

How long does the exam take?
Anyone who is well prepared and has no language or reading difficulties can usually get through the 30 questions in 10 to 15 minutes. If in doubt, the rule of thumb is: your first thought is usually the right one.

How is the best way for me to learn?
Using a learning app – but in short sessions several times a day (on the train, during a break, an hour in the evening) instead of for hours at a stretch. After 3–4 hours at a stretch, hardly anything goes in anyway.

„I can't manage the theory“ – is that true?
The theory test is basically just a chore requiring diligence. Anyone who practises regularly and passes the mock tests in the app can hardly fail. If someone does fail, it is usually simply down to too little practice.

How many times can I retake the theory test?
As often as you like – though there is a gap between two attempts always 14 days. The widespread „3-month ban after failing three times“ is a Mythos: It’s always two weeks. At most, your exam papers (the exam assignment from TÜV) might expire. Anyone who fails three times in a row has usually simply not practised enough.
